KINDER UND Hausmärchen
(Children's and Household Tales) by the brothers Grimm, was first published in Berlin in 1812. That book, together with stories added later, was to become the most popular collection of folk tales in the Western world, translated into numerous languages. It remains pre-eminent to this day.
The two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, were still at university when their interest in German national history led them to search for people - storytellers - who knew the traditional tales, tales which had been handed on by oral tradition and which had never been written down.
It is due to the brothers that these extraordinary and compelling stories have been saved for the generations which have followed them and that children - and adults - can enjoy such wonderful tales as "Rumpelstiltskin"
"The Frog Prince"
"The Fisherman and his Wife" and many others included in this collection.
Naomi Lewis has contributed an illuminating and perceptive introduction. The illustrations are by Amanda Harvey, a winner of the Mother Goose Award for the best newcomer to children's book illustration.
