The neo-gothic Arts Building with its ornate clock tower opened in 1926 as the University's first permanent building. The Arts Building was designed by American, Roy Lippincott.

His tower was based in part on the Tom Tower of Christ Church, Oxford, (designed by Wren). The building contains the departments of Classics, Philosophy and Romance Languages and the University Hall.
